Red Deer Stalking at Glen Dessary

Glen Dessary offers some of the most exciting deer stalking in Scotland. The ground is steep and genuinely wild, and it is not uncommon to take a stag at over 2,500 feet, climbing through mist that lifts to reveal the islands of Rhum, Skye and the Outer Hebrides.

Stag Season

15 August to 20 October

Hind Season

21 October to 15 February. The Estate is closed from 1 December to 15 January, when extreme weather makes the hill unsafe. More on hind stalking.

A Carefully Managed Herd

Our red deer herd is managed with highly selective culling, regular herd counting and a programme of winter feeding. That work provides a steady number of mature stags through the season and keeps the herd in good condition on ground that can be unforgiving in winter.

The Ground

The Estate's 15,000 acres can carry two separate stalking parties working in different areas, so your day is never crowded. Expect steep high ground, long views west, and the kind of stalking that rewards patience and fitness in equal measure.

Your Day on the Hill

You will be accompanied throughout by a qualified stalker who knows this ground intimately. Rifles can be discussed in advance, and we ask that all guests read our stalking terms before arrival. Evenings are spent back at the Lodge with a hot bath, a dram and the day's story told properly.

Up to two parties per day. Lodge rates are subject to a minimum of 10 guests. For smaller groups please contact us. All prices include VAT and are reviewed annually.

Additional Day Option

Stalking is inevitably dependent on weather, visibility and conditions on the hill. Poor conditions can sometimes make a successful stalk difficult or impossible, despite the best efforts of the stalker and guide. If a stalk is unsuccessful for any reason, including due to weather or hill conditions, the stalking fee is non-refundable.

To provide clients with greater flexibility and an additional opportunity, we offer the option of booking a second day of stalking at the time of the original booking. The additional day provides a further opportunity should conditions on the first day prove unsuitable or a stag or hind not be successfully taken. Only one stalk is included in the booking; the additional day does not entitle the client to take a second stalk.

Additional day: £500 per rifle. The additional day must be booked in advance and is subject to availability.

Courses on the Estate

What happens after the shot is as much a part of stalking as the stalk itself, and it is the part most guests never see. Both courses run only during the stalking season, when there is a beast on the larder hook to work with.

Deer Carcass Preparation

A hands-on demonstration in the larder of how a carcass is prepared for butchery, taught by our stalker: the gralloch, hanging, skinning and what to look for at each stage. You are welcome to watch or to do it yourself.

Butchery Masterclass

The follow-up: breaking the carcass down into the cuts, where each one sits on the beast, how to trim and prepare them, and which are worth hanging longer. Take what you have prepared home with you.
