The Bothy: Room for a Larger Party

The Lodge sleeps 15. When your party is larger than that, the Bothy makes up the difference. It stands a short walk down the Lodge's driveway, around 250 yards and a couple of minutes on foot, and adds a further 6 beds to take the Estate to 21 guests. For most stays it is not a separate booking: the Bothy comes as part of a Lodge booking, and everyone in the party eats and gathers together at the Lodge. Sporting parties are the exception, and can take the Bothy on its own on a self-catered basis.

An Extension of the Lodge

Think of the Bothy as further bedrooms rather than a second house. Guests staying there have full run of the Lodge exactly as everyone else does: breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same table, the drawing room and library, the fire in the evening and the dram that follows. The only difference comes at bedtime, when six of the party walk a couple of minutes down the driveway instead of up the stairs.

Not the Bothy You Are Picturing

Scotland's open bothies are famously four walls and a roof, and nobody wants to be the guest sent to one. Ours is nothing of the kind. It is warm and properly comfortable, with a wood-burning stove, heating throughout, mains power, Starlink Wi-Fi running at speeds of up to 250 Mbps, a fully equipped kitchen, a tiled bathroom with a bath and shower, and cosy beds made up and waiting. Whoever ends up there will not feel hard done by, which is worth knowing when you come to divide the rooms.

What to Expect With a Larger Party

A few practical notes for whoever is organising the group.

Dividing the Rooms

The Lodge takes 15 across seven bedrooms and the Bothy the remaining 6, in two twins and two singles. Parties usually give the Bothy to those happy with a short walk at the end of the evening, and it suits a group of friends or older children who like having a corner of their own.

Meals for Everyone

Catering covers the whole party wherever they sleep. Our chef cooks for all 21 and everybody sits down together at the Lodge, so nobody is catering for themselves or eating apart.

The Walk Between

It is a short walk down the Lodge's driveway, around 250 yards, a couple of minutes in daylight and an easy stroll after dinner. Bring a torch for the darker months, and remember there is no light pollution out here: the walk back on a clear night is one of the better parts of the day.

Booking It

For most parties the Bothy is included in a Lodge booking rather than let separately. Sporting parties are the exception and can take it on its own, self-catered, with stalking priced accordingly. Can the Bothy be booked on its own?
