Simulated Shoot Days at Glen Dessary

A full day of simulated game shooting across the Estate, with traps set to throw clays the way birds actually fly here: high off the shoulder of the hill, curling on the wind, driven over the guns from ground that has held deer for centuries. Five drives, each in a different part of the glen, with the team moved between them and everything hosted from the first safety briefing to the last cartridge. There is no season and no bag, so a simulated day can be taken at any time of year, and the shooting is as testing as the party wants it to be.

A Session for Any Standard

Our host sets a variety of targets and adjusts them to the party as the session goes on: birds coming over the treeline, going-away shots down the glen, and a few genuinely testing crossers once everyone has found their feet. If you shoot regularly the targets can be made properly difficult. If you have not picked up a gun since school, they will be set kindly until you are breaking them. It is a popular half-day for mixed groups, particularly where not everyone in the party stalks, and it works as well in the hour before dinner as it does across a full morning.

Lessons for Newcomers

For complete beginners we run it as a lesson rather than a session, for up to four people at a time. The emphasis is on doing it correctly from the outset: how the gun should fit and mount, stance and balance, where your eyes belong, and why the barrels have to keep moving after you pull the trigger. Most people break their first clay inside the first half hour and leave with something they can genuinely build on. It is a sound introduction for anyone thinking about stalking later in the week, and an even better one for guests who had always assumed shooting was not for them.

Good to Know

Who It Suits

Shooting parties keeping their eye in out of season, corporate teams entertaining clients, and stag parties who want a proper day rather than a novelty. Mixed abilities work well, since the drives can be set to test the good shots without leaving anyone else standing empty.

Numbers

Five guns is the minimum for a day to run properly across five drives. Larger teams are straightforward, and we will tell you honestly at what point a second day makes more sense than a crowded line.

Guns and Cartridges

Tell us what you are bringing and what you need. You are on the open hill all day, so boots and proper layers rather than town shoes, and ear and eye protection is provided.

Part of Your Stay

A simulated day sits naturally in an exclusive-use stay at the Lodge: shoot through the day, then a private chef and a whisky tasting by the fire that evening. It pairs equally well with stalking in season.
