Fly Fishing at Glen Dessary

The Estate has two rivers, the Dessary and the Pean, and a scatter of hill lochans holding small, wild brown trout. It is quiet, unhurried fishing in genuinely remote country, often with nobody else in sight for the whole day. For the stocked Lodge loch, pike at Glen Pean and our full price list, see fishing at Glen Dessary.

Learning to Cast

Our guided lessons are a tailored introduction to fly fishing on our lochs and rivers, kept to a maximum of three guests so that instruction stays clear and the water stays quiet. Beginners start with the fundamentals: how the rod loads, how to keep the line moving, and how to read where a fish is likely to be lying. Improvers can work on distance, presentation and the roll cast for tight banks. Either way you will be casting properly by the end of the morning, and very often into a fish.

Fishing at Your Own Pace

If you would rather fish alone, unaccompanied fishing on the River Dessary is free of charge for Lodge guests. Take a rod out after breakfast, walk up the glen and work the pools at your own pace, with nobody waiting behind you and nowhere in particular to be. It makes an ideal rest day between days on the hill, and the river is close enough that you can be back at the Lodge for lunch or stay out until the light goes.

The Hill Lochs

Above the glen, a scatter of hill lochs sits in the folds of the high ground, and they are the Estate's quiet secret. Some are a short walk from the track; others take a little more getting to. The trout in them run smaller than the river fish but they are wild, free-rising and eager, and on a still evening the whole surface comes alive. You will very likely have the water entirely to yourself, which is not something many anglers can say any more.

For the lochans that lie furthest out, we run a half-day trip by Argocat, with rods, tackle and a picnic carried for you. It is the easiest way to reach water that would otherwise cost you most of the day in walking, and you can read what the trip involves on our fishing page.
